Learn to film like a pro.

I have been shooting commercially for years — weddings, corporate videos, live events, brand campaigns. And in that time, I have watched a lot of people pick up a camera for the first time and make the exact same five mistakes.

None of them are your fault. Cameras are designed to hide these settings from you. Auto mode exists because manufacturers know most people won't dig deeper. But if you want footage that actually looks good — footage you're proud to post, share, or show a client — you need to know what's going wrong and why.

Here are the five settings I see beginners get wrong every single time.

1. Leaving the ISO too high

ISO controls how sensitive your camera sensor is to light. The higher the ISO, the brighter your image — but also the grainier. A lot of beginners crank the ISO up in low light and wonder why their footage looks noisy and cheap.

The fix: learn to work with what light you have. Move closer to a window. Add a lamp. Lower the ISO and let the environment do more of the work. Grain is the enemy of professional-looking footage.

2. Shooting with too fast a shutter speed for video

This one catches almost everyone out. For video, your shutter speed should be roughly double your frame rate — so if you're shooting at 25fps, your shutter speed should be around 1/50. Go faster and your footage will look choppy and unnatural, even if it's in focus.

This is called the 180-degree rule and it's one of the first things I teach in class — because breaking it is one of the most common reasons footage looks "wrong" without people knowing why.

3. Letting the camera choose the aperture

Aperture controls depth of field — how much of your image is in focus. In auto or aperture priority mode, your camera makes this decision for you. Sometimes it gets it right. A lot of the time it doesn't.

Shooting a portrait? You probably want a wide aperture (low f-number like f/1.8 or f/2.8) to blur the background and make your subject pop. Shooting a landscape? You want everything sharp, so a narrow aperture (f/8 or above) is better. Your camera doesn't know the difference. You need to.

4. Ignoring white balance

White balance tells your camera what "white" looks like in your current lighting conditions. Get it wrong and your footage will look too orange, too blue, or just generally off. Auto white balance tries its best but shifts constantly — which means your colours change between shots even when nothing else does.

Set a manual white balance for your location before you start shooting. It takes thirty seconds and makes a massive difference to how consistent and professional your footage looks.

5. Never shooting in manual mode

This is the big one. Most beginners avoid manual mode because it feels complicated. I get it — there are a lot of settings and it's easy to get the exposure wrong.

But here's the truth: manual mode isn't complicated once someone explains it properly. It's just three settings — aperture, shutter speed, ISO — working together. Once you understand how they relate to each other, you'll never want to go back to auto.

That gives students the confidence to experiment — to try different angles, test different settings, make mistakes — without every frame looking like a disaster.

Let me be straight with you: auto mode is holding your footage back.

I know that is a bold claim. Auto mode exists for a reason — it makes cameras accessible, it prevents completely blown-out or pitch-black shots, and for snapshots it works fine. But if you're trying to create content that looks intentional, professional, or just noticeably better than what everyone else is posting — auto mode is your biggest obstacle.

Here's what's actually happening when you shoot on auto, and why switching to manual will change everything.

Auto mode is making creative decisions you should be making

Every time you point your camera at something, it's making three decisions: how much light to let in (aperture), how fast to expose the frame (shutter speed), and how sensitive to make the sensor (ISO). These aren't just technical choices — they're creative ones.

Your aperture determines whether your background is blurred or sharp. Your shutter speed determines whether movement looks smooth or frozen. Your ISO determines how clean or grainy your image looks. When you shoot on auto, the camera decides all of this based on one goal: correct exposure. Not beautiful footage. Not the mood you're going for. Just technically not too bright and not too dark.

That's a very low bar.

Auto mode shifts constantly — and it shows

Here's something most beginners don't realise: auto mode doesn't just set your exposure at the start of a shot. It adjusts continuously. That means if you pan across a scene — moving from a bright window to a darker wall — your exposure shifts mid-shot. The footage gets darker or brighter as you move. It looks amateur. It looks like you don't know what you're doing, even if the composition is great.

In manual mode, you set your exposure before you shoot and it stays there. Consistent, controlled, professional.

Manual mode isn't as complicated as it looks

I hear this all the time: "I tried manual mode and it was too confusing." I understand — looking at an unfamiliar menu of numbers is intimidating. But manual mode is really just three settings working together, and once someone explains the relationship between them clearly, it clicks fast.

We go outside, we practice adjusting the settings in real time, and by the end of the session every student is shooting in manual mode. Not fumbling with it. Actually using it.

The image has more depth. The colours look richer. The background is blurred exactly as much as they wanted. It looks like something a professional shot.
